Manta Joins SeaWorld

The SeaWorld franchise has expanded well beyond Budweiser Clydesdales and the Shamu Adventure show. Gone are the days where the park was viewed solely as an educational experience and marine research institute with a beautiful killer whale mascot. Over the years, the park has expanded and changed into a thrill-ride champion and competitor to other Orlando theme parks like Universal Studios and Walt Disney World.

With the addition of Kraken, SeaWorld’s first large-scale roller coaster, the park was launched into the coaster enthusiast spotlight. At the time of its grand opening in 2000, Kraken was the largest roller coaster in South Florida and the first floorless roller coaster in the Southern United States. Even though Animal Kingdom’s Expedition Everest has now taken Kraken’s longest coaster crown, SeaWorld took the proverbial ball and ran into a whole new world of marine related adventure.

The latest thrill ride experience at SeaWorld is the award-winning Manta coaster. Awarded the “Best New Attraction” title by ThemeParkInsider.com, Manta is the tallest and fastest “flying” roller coaster in the world. The manta ray-shaped coaster gets its “flying” title thanks to the position of riders on the ride. When SeaWorld engineers created the ride, they intended to mimic the gliding movement of rays in the water for their riders. So, once riders board their specific car, they will be tilted face down before beginning the 140-ft ascension up the coaster’s first hill.

If the tail whips, pretzel-loops and corkscrews of Manta are too much for you, the ride’s queue features an elaborate exhibit of ocean creatures. The queue at Manta is open to those riding the coaster and for those who are only curious as to what the exhibit has in store. Built to resemble a sea village, the Manta queue features ten aquariums with over 60 species of animals and 300 variations of the ride’s mascot: the ray. If you are waiting in line or just passing through, the aquarium will give you the feeling of being underwater as rays and tropical fish glide overhead.

With rides like Manta and Kraken, sales of SeaWorld tickets have greatly improved, with many SeaWorld execs attributing the increase in attendance to their water-themed coasters. Your best bet in experiencing these great rides as well as the beautiful aquariums, fireworks and live entertainment is to check out the deals DWTickets.com has to offer. Manta awaits!

Manta Will Open for Sneak Preview

You’ve been waiting all spring, and now, SeaWorld Orlando is rewarding you for your patience. The aquatic theme park will be opening its new roller coaster Manta early for a special sneak preview this Tuesday, May 5 (Cinco de Mayo). Manta will open at noon that day, as well as every day afterwards through the week until at least the following Sunday, May 10. Though guests should be prepared for periodic closures, it’s still a great chance to ride the ray before it officially opens.

Manta’s official opening date is May 22, but rumors have been circulating for a while now that the ride has come together so quickly and so well that guests will likely get to ride it for limited hours leading up to May 22.

“A lot of the locals and residents want to experience this before summer,” said SeaWorld spokesperson Nick Gollattscheck.

The sneak preview announcement was actually first made by Shamu via Twitter, who pronounced, “I have decided to open Manta early. Tuesday, May 5 at noon. Yes, I have that kind of pull. When you speak of me, speak well.” Needless to say, Shamu’s not a modest killer whale.

Manta will be a first for SeaWorld in many ways – though it’s not the park’s only roller coaster, it will be the first flying roller coaster of its kind in the park and in the world. Riders will begin by climbing into traditional seats and harnesses, but soon enough they’ll see what makes the ride so special as the entire seating assembly rotates forward, positioning riders horizontally.

From there, they’ll soar over the park like a Manta ray, flying headfirst at 56 mph. The coaster features a track-twisting pretzel loop, in-line spins, a close call with a waterfall, and a wing dip just inches from the water that throws out a 14-foot high, 60-foot long spray of water.

Adding on to the incredible experience is Manta’s aquarium; while waiting on line for the ride, guests will get a glimpse into the underwater worlds of tropical fish and rays. Floor to ceiling aquariums will showcase rare leafy sea dragons, colorful clownfish, and mysterious sea anemones. Smaller guests will even get to ‘pop up’ into an aquarium and come face-to-face with the aquarium’s inhabitants – which include three hundred rays and a massive Pacific octopus, which creeps along the interior of Manta’s saltwater habitat.

“Manta takes what SeaWorld does best – animal encounters and thrill rides – and blends
them to create something you can’t find anywhere else in the world,” said Dan Brown,
SeaWorld Orlando’s general manager. “Manta’s actually the next generation of what makes
Orlando so much fun. Orlando is the must-do vacation this summer, and Manta is the must-see."

So what are you waiting for? Get your first look at the must-see attraction of the summer, and grab your discount SeaWorld tickets from DWTickets.com. We can’t imagine a better way to celebrate Cinco de Mayo than by riding a manta ray at SeaWorld.

Dolphins Make Amazing Bubble Art at SeaWorld

It’s common knowledge that dolphins are some of the most intelligent animals in the world; they can be trained to perform amazing tricks and tasks, and if size is any indicator, the simple fact that the adult bottlenose dolphin’s brain is 25% heavier than a human brain says a lot about how smart they are.

Since research on the dolphin mind is limited, though, scientists have never been able to make any conclusive claims about whether the animals are truly intelligent or not. However, the happy-go-lucky residents at SeaWorld Orlando are proving just how brainy they are with a new skill that they learned all on their own.

It’s been known for some time that dolphins are able to communicate with one another. However, what’s less commonly known is the fact that dolphins can apparently learn from one another; several of the dolphins at SeaWorld Orlando have demonstrated this ability by the fact that they now know how to blow beautiful underwater bubbles using their blowholes. And not only can they blow bubbles, but they can also manipulate and play with them. It’s an amazing and breathtaking thing to see, and the skill is getting a lot of attention from trainers, spectators, and media outlets alike.

“If you had a balloon at home and you flex and play with the end of it to make different sounds – [the dolphins] can do that with their blowhole…They angle their heads so that it comes up perfectly straight to create a ring,” said SeaWorld’s dolphin trainers.

What makes it all even more amazing is that a few years ago, only one dolphin had this bubble-making capability; apparently, however, that dolphin taught the others. Three months ago, the trainers noticed that many more of the animals had picked up the skill, and today, they can be seen blowing bubbles, elongating them or making them smaller, and even spinning them and swimming through them.

“It’s like a little halo at first and then they just push it and it gets smaller,” said a trainer. “They either take their rostrum or head and move it in a circle to make [the bubble] bigger.”

The dolphins even try to “steal” bubbles from one another, and one dolphin will pop his bubble creation if another dolphin tries to take it away – as if to say, “No, that’s my toy, you can’t take it.”

This amazing story has been featured on ABC News, and in response to the interest, SeaWorld even put out a new blog to keep up with dolphin news. But park fans and dolphin lovers can go in person and see the animals’ amazing talent for themselves at SeaWorld. There, in Dolphin Cove, the animals can be seen frolicking, blowing bubbles, and playing with them in the underwater viewing area.

So if you haven’t been to SeaWorld in a while, you’ll want to get your SeaWorld tickets from DWTickets.com in order to see this amazing dolphin skill. It’s an incredible sight to see, and who knows? You might even discover the secret of how they do it!

Beat the Winter with Indoor Shows

Winters are pretty interesting here in Orlando – one week, temperatures run a pleasant 70 degrees, and the next week, it’s time to break out the turtlenecks and parkas! But until the season starts heating up more regularly in the coming months, Orlando theme parks have plenty of attractions to keep you warm, with indoor shows that are both an entertaining and comfortable way to spend an afternoon.

First up on the list of our favorites is definitely A’Lure, The Call of the Ocean, the newest show at SeaWorld Orlando. Performing daily at the Nautilus Theater, this theatrical production combines mesmerizing under-the-sea visuals with Cirque du Soleil-style acrobatics and athleticism.

Set to a musical score recorded by the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, A’Lure’s dynamic 30-minute production takes guests on a journey through the ocean’s depths and mysteries. With a dozen Chinese acrobats and vibrant animated images, it tells the mythical story of the Sea Sirens, who have lured entranced fishermen into the water for centuries. The show takes place on a massive stage with an oversized projection screen serving as an ever-changing backdrop while gravity-defying aerial tumblers, scaling pole climbers, lyrical dancers, and unicycle champions dazzle on stage.

Over at the Hollywood area of Universal Studios Orlando, another great indoor show is a tried and true classic, Terminator 2: 3D Battle Across Time. Throw on your 3D glasses and settle into a comfortable theater seat while you watch Sarah and John Connor travel into the future to destroy SkyNet. But it won’t be easy – the T-1000 is back to kill John, though luckily, the T-800 (Arnold) is there to help stop him too. With on-screen special effects, 3D cinematography that seems to hover right before your face, and live-action stunts, the Terminator 2: 3D is a beloved Universal Studios favorite.

And at Walt Disney World, there’s no shortage of indoor shows among the five parks. However, one recent addition that’s particularly fun is Finding Nemo – The Musical at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Adapted from the popular and funny Disney-Pixar film into a 30-minute Broadway-style musical, Finding Nemo is fun for all ages. Inside the Theater in the Wild at the DinoLand USA area, the musical features Marlin, his curious son Nemo, and their friend Dory performing new musical numbers inspired by lines from the movie, including “Just Keep Swimming.” Even if you’re not big into musicals, this one is a sight to see with innovative lighting, special effects, and theatrical puppets, some as big as cars.

So next time the temperatures drop, grab a sweater and head on over to one of these Orlando theme parks. You’ll be snuggly and warm while you enjoy a show, and when the fun’s over, you can skip right on to another fun indoor attraction. Look to DWTickets.com for your discount Orlando theme park tickets, and before you know it, you’ll be escaping the winter cold in style.

Jack Hanna to be at SeaWorld

One of SeaWorld Orlando’s most popular and beloved guests is returning to the park this November: celebrity animal expert Jack Hanna. Hanna, who was a guest at SeaWorld last year, is coming to the park for a special Jack Hanna Weekend on November 8th and 9th. Don’t miss Jack as he brings some of his exotic feathered, furry, and scaly friends from all over the world.

Hanna has been a valued guest at Anheuser-Busch Adventure Parks for some time, and has made several television appearances with animals from both Busch Gardens and SeaWorld. Hanna first got his start working in a veterinarian’s office, where his love of animals led him to opening a pet shop, and then, eventually, directing the Central Florida Zoo in Sanford, Florida. Five years later, Hanna was named director of the zoo in Columbus, Ohio. While bringing the Columbus Zoo to new heights and increasing attendance with new programs and events, Hanna was invited to appear on Good Morning America and eventually The Late Show with David Letterman. It wasn’t long before he became a celebrated animal expert and wildlife correspondent, and his media appearances took up too much time from his director position at the zoo. He was appointed to Director Emeritus of the Columbus Zoo in 1992, and in 1993, he became host of Jack Hanna’s Animal Adventures, a nationally syndicated television series. After ten years of success with this program, Hanna decided to start a new unscripted show, Into the Wild, where he and his family travel all over the world in search of interesting animals and cultures. Into the Wild recently won a Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Children’s Series.

While SeaWorld Orlando already features a host of fun and exciting animals such as sea lions, dolphins, polar bears, walruses, whales, manatees, and orcas (including the famous Shamu), Jack Hanna’s visit to the park is a great opportunity to see some new animals, especially those that aren’t necessarily aquatic. Hanna has been known to appear with animals such as bald eagles, tigers and leopards, alligators and crocodiles, hyenas, armadillos, and more. Hanna often brings animals that are endangered species in order to educate people about the problems they face, such as over-hunting and habitat destruction.

Jack Hanna will be returning to SeaWorld again in late February with the Jack Hanna Animal Adventures. It will be a different show with all-new animals, so don’t miss Hanna this November if you can help it. The show is included in the ticket price, so there’s no reason not to get your discount Sea World tickets at DWTickets.com right now! Whether it’s with Jack Hanna’s November or February visit, all his fun and interesting animals will have you roaring with excitement!

Kraken at Sea World

Sea World is Orlando's most dynamic theme park, with an array of attractions, shows and thrill rides. Kraken is starting to get a lot of attention, so I thought you should be aware of how amazing a ride this really is. First of all, Kraken happens to be the longest, tallest, and fastest roller coaster in all of Orlando. That is a pretty cool fact, since Orlando is home to Disney's Space Mountain, Islands of Adventure's Hulk and Dueling Dragons, and MGM's Rock N Rollercoaster. Kraken reaches the heights of a 15 story building, and is also the only floorless roller coaster in Orlando. Save big with discounted Sea World tickets and CLICK HERE!

Kraken takes you 150 feet in the air and spins you upside-down 7 times for a blood-rushing thrill ride experience of a lifetime. While Sea World once was all about Shamu and the dolphin pools, the creative engineering teams have gotten together and started building some spectacular roller coasters. Kraken is not to be missed, so come to Sea World - Orlando and see what all the buzz is about. The next time you come to Orlando and are looking for a great roller coaster ride to get your kids screaming and hearts pounding, check out Sea World and climb onto Kraken - the fastest roller coaster in town.

Makahiki Luau at SeaWorld

SeaWorld Orlando has a great dinner show that is fun for the whole family. The Makahiki Luau Dinner Show at SeaWorld features delicious food, dancing, audience participation, and many other spectacular events that make this outing one to remember. From fire dancing by the "Big Kahuna" to sensational grilled mahi mahi and BBQ ribs, this dinner attraction is definitely worth checking out while in Orlando. Makahiki Luau has some very talented hula dancers and entertainment and this attraction is something you can take anyone to. It is a great place to take a date, excellent entertainment for a large group or family, and most importantly the atmosphere is extremely festive and has a lot to offer.

Orlando has many different dinner shows all with something special and unique to offer, but Makahiki Luau at SeaWorld is one event which will leave a memorable and lasting impression for everyone to remember. The food is top-notch, the show is exciting, and the tropical atmosphere is truly delightful. This is one of the most entertaining, electrifying and fulfilling shows in Orlando, and I urge you to check it out. Have a great weekend, and see you in Orlando.

Sea World is building a Water Park - "AQUATICA" !

Sea World is finally building a water park to rival Orlando's "Big Three" of Wet N Wild, Blizzard Beach, and Typhoon Lagoon. Sea World will be making their move in the form of AQUATICA - a tremendous, 59 acre water theme park that will combine up-close marine animal experiences with thrilling water slides and an enormous 80,000 square foot man-made beach. Sea World Aquatica will have 36 water slides, six sparkling pools and lagoons, and exotic marine animals and tropical flora from all over the world. Aquatica is slated to open its doors one year from now, in March of 2008. Sea World Aquatica will be highlighted by a first-of-its-kind 300-foot water slide, featuring a 42-foot drop, that will take riders in clear tubes underwater through an actual dolphin habitat. You have to take a look at the artwork and pictures to see what I'm talking about - Aquatica looks unreal! I was told that private cabanas and waiters will be available on the beach, and due to the large amount of rides, the lines will be very short. It seems to me that the people at Sea World know what they're doing, and are trying to make Aquatica stand out from all the rest. As far as I'm concerned, it always does, and I cannot wait until 2008!

Orlando Events

Every couple of weeks, Orlando has something special come to town. Since Orlando is the vacation capital of the world, there are always exciting comings and goings that I like to write about from time to time. The Hard Rock Live at Universal Orlando Citywalk has concerts and bands coming from time to time. Kenny Loggins is here tomorrow night, and Diana Ross will be in town toward the end of the month. The Walt Disney World Resort is currently running their Flower and Garden Festival at Epcot through June. There were a bunch of Easter-related events going on in the theme parks over the past weekend, with celebrity guest speakers and great food. There will be a new themed weekend for Cinco de Mayo (May 4-6, 2007) where you can salute in the holiday with some cool bands and great Latin-inspired food. Disney World will have a Mother's Day celebration May 11-13 of this year, which has been a time-honored tradition. Shaquille O'Neal and the World Champion Miami Heat will come into town to take on the Orlando Magic next week, and anytime "SHAQ" comes to town, you know that is going to be a blast. Sea World has a new family member as baby Shamu was born last month. That is the 9th Killer Whale born at Sea World -Orlando over the past 15 years. As your official DW Blog Man, I just wanted to give everyone the run-down on upcoming events, so get down to Orlando, Florida and experience the magic with your friends and family today!

Busch Gardens - Tampa

Busch Gardens in Tampa, Florida is one of America's most exciting roller-coaster theme parks. Every ride at Busch Gardens is a hair-raising, spine-tingling rush of adrenaline-pumping excitement that keeps you coming back for more. I have not been to Busch Gardens in a few years, but after doing some research of what is going on over there in the next couple of months, I cannot wait to get over to Tampa and hit those coasters! Busch Gardens has an African theme with ridiculously thrilling and chilling roller-coasters such as the Kumba, Montu, Skeikra, Congo River Rapids, and many more. A recently new show, Pirates 4-D is a hilariously entertaining 4-D comedy adventure for the entire family - taking place in the new Timbuktu Theater.

Busch Gardens also has a Serengeti Railroad where you can explore the Serengeti Plain with large herds of beautiful African animals. Animals such as free-roaming giraffes, zebras, ostrich, and antelopes can be viewed in a very natural habitat. When touring on the Serengeti Express inside Busch Gardens, you feel like you are on an African safari. Busch Gardens also has a brand new musical review called the Mirage Canteen where you can travel back in time to the 1940's and hear music and see costumes from the Golden Age of Hollywood. Busch Gardens is only an hour drive from Orlando and the Disney theme parks, and is well worth the trip. If you are really into some intense roller-coaster action, head over to Busch Gardens - Tampa for the time of your life.
